As part of the evolution of the Tupu programme, the latest cohort has been given the opportunity to be caretakers of the Tuia māara area alongside some very knowledgeable kaumātua.
Using the traditional principles of maramataka, the Māori lunar calendar, the group weeded and cultivated the main kōpae māara. Collected seaweed was placed into the dug trenches and will break down over time to provide nutrients to the soil, soil organisms, and future plantings.
In the coming weeks, the team will plant winter vegetable seedlings which they have raised from seed and Māori potatoes or taewa. The aim is to grow horticulture skills whilst also connecting with the community and supplying the Tupu whānau with healthy kai.
